When Aaron Lloyd walks into June’s Pizzeria in Dryden, New York, he’s ready to get to work.
At 26 years old, Aaron has become a valued member of the restaurant’s kitchen team, where he works part-time on vary days throughout the week. His responsibilities include washing dishes, preparing sauces such as blue cheese dressing and garlic aioli, and portioning ingredients. Recently, he even had the opportunity to bake a pizza for the first time.
Aaron’s path to employment began through Springbrook’s Supported Employment Program. After participating in Springbrook’s prevocational program, Aaron shared his interest in working in the restaurant industry with his Employment Specialist, Taylor Roscoe. Together, they explored opportunities and found the perfect fit at June’s Café and Pizzeria.
Prior to joining the team at June’s, Aaron participated in the Career Specific Vocational Training (CVST) with Unity House which was a 10-week course focused on food preparation skills such as chopping, dicing, and kitchen safety. The experience helped build a strong foundation that continues to support his success both at work and at home. Since starting at June’s five months ago, Aaron has embraced the fast-paced nature of the kitchen. While multitasking presented an initial challenge, he has learned to approach tasks one step at a time and has grown increasingly confident in his abilities.
“I enjoy the behind-the-scenes kitchen work,” Aaron shared. “I also really like the people I work with. They are silly and serious at times, but always supportive.”
Aaron’s coworkers have noticed his growth and dedication. Danny, a member of the kitchen staff, said Aaron has become increasingly comfortable in the busy kitchen environment.
“He’s quick to help when asked and always on top of his tasks,” Danny said. “I wish we had ten more people with Aaron’s work ethic.”
According to co-owner Alysha, Aaron has become an important part of the June’s team.
“Aaron has his routine down, is always asking if he can help, and is fast and efficient,” she said.
A key factor in Aaron’s success has been the collaborative support provided by June’s management team and Springbrook. Taylor worked alongside Aaron and his employers to identify strategies that would promote independence and confidence. One example was creating a kitchen reference guide with portion measurements to help Aaron complete tasks independently. Rather than directing concerns through support staff, Alysha and her brother and co-owner, Adam, communicate directly with Aaron, treating him as the capable professional he is. Aaron says regular check-ins help him feel supported while also building confidence in his work.
Taylor has enjoyed watching Aaron’s growth throughout the past year.
“Aaron is easy to connect with and is willing to grow,” she said.
Outside of work, Aaron enjoys reading, especially books by James Patterson, and participates in Special Olympics teams like basketball and soccer. The flexibility of his work schedule allows him to remain active in the sports he loves while continuing to build valuable job skills and independence.
Looking ahead, Aaron hopes to continue expanding his responsibilities in the kitchen by learning more about operating the fryer and making pizzas. Personally, he is working toward earning his learner’s permit and becoming more independent.
For employers considering hiring someone with a disability, Alysha offers simple advice: “Give people the opportunity. All workplaces should have more inclusive environments.”
Aaron’s journey is a powerful reminder that inclusive employment benefits everyone. Through opportunity, support, and a willingness to learn, he continues to build skills, confidence, and a future filled with possibility.
July is Disability Pride Month which celebrates the talents, contributions, and achievements of people with disabilities. Aaron hopes his story will encourage others to pursue their goals. He wants people to know that they are capable of accomplishing whatever they set their minds to with determination, hard work, and the right support.
