Pre-Vocational Services help people who are not yet ready for competitive employment to prepare for future job opportunities, developing the foundational skills needed for success in the workplace. This is accomplished through personalized, goal-oriented support, including community-based experiences that promote independence and adaptability, and ongoing coaching to support growth in areas such as communication, teamwork, and responsibility.
Brian began his employment journey in the Pathways to Employment program, where he completed a paid internship. During that time, his employment specialist noticed Brian excelled when he had a single supervisor and tasks that allowed him to work at a steady pace. The internship also helped Brian learn how to accept constructive criticism. When the internship ended, Brian decided to enroll in Prevocational Services to continue building his professional skills.
Like many journeys, Brian’s path to employment has had its challenges, but his persistence is paying off. Through his prevocational assessments, Brian has volunteered at the Susquehanna ASPCA and the St. James Church Food Pantry. These experiences have brought him closer to his goal of securing a paid job in the community and becoming more independent.

Supported Employment helps people find, secure, and thrive in meaningful paid employment. This option was perfect for Emily when she began her career at Price Chopper in March 2022, volunteering to bag groceries. Since then, Emily has progressed to working the night shift and has taken on bagging, stocking items, and arranging displays and aisles to look pristine. Emily is loved throughout the Price Chopper store for her impeccable eye for detail and her ability to pick up new skills quickly. The store manager, Bill, shares, “Emily is a wonderful employee. We all notice when she is not here because the store is not nearly as neat and tidy. Working at Price Chopper has been an excellent opportunity for Emily to develop skills that put her in a job-holding position, which is the goal of supported employment.”
